Topic: Business as Unusual: Shift From Big Problems to Great Opportunities Compare and contrast two ways to doing business. See how business as UNusual enables a shift from managing the status quo to initiating a cycle of continuously moving an organization from where it is to where it could be. Conducting business as usual provides the results we’ve always gotten. Become familiar with some unusual practices that produce better results. Discover the letter grade for the quality of supplied items a business as usual operation imposes. Examine why a business as UNusual enterprise would expend resources (time, money, personnel) on parts that are good and arrive on time. See a distinction between the businesses in what “teamwork” means. W. Edwards Deming provided a map to understand the organizations in which we work. Aware of the challenges that organizations face in their business as usual operation, he shared simple explanations to enable a transformation to a better alternative. “Sure, we have to solve problems. Certainly stamp out the fire. Stamp out the fire and get nowhere. Stamp out the fires puts us back to where we were in the first place.” Business as UNusual offers opportunities to both prevent problems and seek opportunities for investment. About Tim Higgins Since retiring from Rocketdyne, Tim has worked as a NASA Safety and Mission Assurance specialist, and is now a Managing Partner of InVista Associates, Inc., a group practicing Lean Accelerated TM and assisting organizations to develop practices that provide business as unusual. He is President of the In2:InThinking Network, a non-profit, conducting its 16th Annual Conference 7-11 June 2017. He has 27 years of experience at Rocketdyne in the engineering, manufacturing, and quality departments. He plays o jogo bonito (the beautiful game) 4 days a week and enjoys time in Brazil and the US with wife and his multi-lingual son.
